This year’s winner of the FILMFESTSPIELE VENEDIG has just been shown at only two festivals in Germany. It is unlikely that this film will have a release at the cinemas and this might have to do with the length of the film. But do take the time, it is worth it! The new work by LAV DIAZ is not only long, it is fantastic! The starting point of the story is LEO TOLSTOY’s novella “God sees the truth, but waits” (1875). After 30 years of wrong imprisonment, Diaz’s protagonist Horacia Somostro (CHARO SANTOS-CONCIO) is released in 1997. Her path leads her to the places of the past, to the city of the persons responsible for her fate. Horacia seeks retribution. Time plays an important role, which LAV DIAZ takes to tell the story and demands from the audience. Horace’s companions have their very own stories, which do intertwine with hers: the egg seller Magbabalot, the sad transsexual Hollanda, a crazy homeless woman, all captured by Diaz’s ingenious camera of a modern noir.
