“Thinking of Germany at night/
Just puts all thought of sleep to flight/
No longer I can close an eye/
Tears gather and I start to cry.”
Henry Heine (1843)
Sound becomes music, Music move. Three days awake. Dancing into a state of ecstasy is part of many civilisations. As a part of it, Techno, House and DJ culture still has a relatively young history. A cultural phenomenon, not just for the history books. Born in Wiesbaden, the director Romuald Karmakar follows the DJs into the clubs and lends images to what has been well known in the LICHTER region for a long time: beside Berlin, the Rhine-Main area is one of the epicenters of Techno and House. Clubs such as Sven Väth’s “OMEN” and the “DORIAN GRAY”, in addition to the “TRESOR” in Berlin, gave the dance experience its hypnotic, transformative power and raised the frenzy to a new level of consciousness.
Born in Wiesbaden in 1965, KARMAKAR now lives in Berlin. With his documentary and feature films, the director, producer and screenwriter has been a frequent guest at the Berlinale; In 2011, he was the jury chairman of “DIALOGUE EN PERSPECTIVE” in the SEKTION PERSPEKTIVE DEUTSCHES KINO.
